Behavior Of Many SEO Companies:
My experience with few SEO companies:
As a small entrepreneur owner, it’s tough to know when to farm something out or keep it in-house. In past few years, I’ve opted to farm out SEO services because I didn’t feel it was my strength. But oh, boy, have I received an education on the topic through the few previews years.
SEO Company #1
The first SEO company I hired was from an social media place. I frequented for e-commerce biz owners. I ended up firing them at the end of the contract. Why? No results. Lots of excuses. Conversations were filled with industry jargon as opposed to business English. Dazzle with the bullshit, right?
LESSON: Ditch ’em fast when you can’t understand their emails or conversations. If you haven’t explained so I can understand, that is not communication. SEO buzzwords are not business English.

SEO Company #2
The second SEO company I hired was a referral from a supplier. One of this SEO company’s team actually had some experience in the promotional products world. (We didn’t call it swag as much then. Thinking there would be less of a learning curve, I was excited. It was short lived. These are 5 of the keyword phrases they wanted to target: totes purses, classy totes, purse totes and jelly belly (I still have the spreadsheet.). My business is company swag/merch/promotional products aka stuff with your business or school logo. Are you going to be searching for ‘classy totes’ for your next event or ‘jelly belly’ for your next trade show giveaway? I didn’t think so.
LESSON: If an SEO company doesn’t take the time to understand your business, they will not be able to execute. Keywords, content and social media will all be huge misses.

So, after kissing a fair amount of money down the drain, I sat tight for years on the SEO front. Business was great. Most of our business comes through referrals who wanted a personal contact. What a concept. SEO wasn’t a big deal since the website was basically being used as a catalog. Fast forward to 2017. My business plan had a new focus. I wanted to focus on internet traffic. That meant another trek to the SEO frontier. I interviewed SEO providers.
